MISSOULA - James William "Copa" Mulkey, 70, of Missoula, passed away peacefully at home from natural causes on Sunday, February 5, 2012.  He received wonderful care from his daughter Marci and family.  He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family in his final days.

Jim was born December 30, 1941, in Miles City to James Rufus Mulkey and Muriel Evelyn Wolfe.  He was educated in schools in Miles City and Anaconda.  He was very proud to join the United States Navy in 1959 and served on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy he married Mary Ann Adams in December 1962 and had three wonderful children.  Jim worked at the Water Department in Miles City for six years; he then moved his family in 1968 to Missoula, where he worked at Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. paper mill.  He retired from the mill after 35 years in 2003.

He and Mary Ann were married for 17 years and divorced in 1981.  In April 1983 he married Florita "Sanch" Sanchelli and they were married for 16 years and divorced in 1999.  He remained friends with Mary Ann and Sanch until his passing.  James enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his children and grandchildren, spending time with his family and playing cards.  He adored all his grandchildren and looked forward to his visits with them, especially the babies and toddlers.  Whenever he held a new grandchild he would say, "This is what life is all about."

James was preceded in death by his father, James Rufus Mulkey and stepmother Diane Mulkey; his mother Muriel Evelyn Foster and stepfather Cliff Foster; his sister, Phyllis Gerber, brother-in-law Dave Gerber and his niece Robin Gerber.  He is survived by his children, Patrick (Gloria) Mulkey, Marci (Leroy) Trowbridge, Paul (Connie) Mulkey; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Wayne (Gerry) Mulkey; sister Gayle (Steve) Serquina; numerous nieces and nephews; his beloved friend, Tony Lotton, whom he loved like a son and Keeta, his loving canine companion.

Memorial services were held February 11, 2012 at Garden City Funeral Home.  Honorary pallbearers were his three grandsons, Jake Trowbridge, Zachary Mulkey and Shane Mulkey.

A Celebration of Life followed at the Missoula VFW Club, 245.  Interment was 2:00PM Thursday, February 16, at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula.  All were welcomed to attend. James was laid to rest with full military honors.

Rest in Peace dear friend.
