Martin A. 'Bud' Hegel

MISSOULA - Martin A. "Bud" Hegel, 79, of Missoula, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center after a long battle with cancer.

Bud was born on August 24, 1923, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Martin and Rosalia (Ehly) Hegel.  He attended school until the eighth grade, graduating on May 20, 1938.

Bud served his country in the Navy from June 12, 1943, until his discharge on April 12, 1946.  He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and WWII Victory Medal.

After his discharge, Bud worked at Longview Fiber in Portland, Oregon, until he moved to Montana. He was employed in Frenchtown beginning in 1957 by Waldorf-Horner Paper Products.  He worked at the pulp mill until his retirement in 1986.

Bud was one of the founding fathers of the Frenchtown Volunteer Fire Department, retiring as chief in 1987.  He was involved in many community projects, the latest being Dragon Hollow.  On December 24, 2001, Bud married Lorna Parks.

Bud was preceded in death by his son Martin A. "Marty" Hegel; sisters Madge Shepherd, Rose Sticka, (infant) Margaret Hegel and Von Hall; and infant brothers Theodore and Johnny Hegel.

Bud is survived by his wife Lorna of Missoula; daughter Cheri (Rod) Rogge of Miles City; sons Frank (Lorrie) Hegel, John (Kaylie) Hegel and Monte Hegel, all of Missoula; stepchildren Debbie Deal, Robert Naef and Roberta Stinson; sisters Kate Geist, Mary Schwalger, Gen Keller and Fritz Stephen; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11:00AM,  Thursday, September 5, at the Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies Chapel, at the corner of Spurgin and Reserve, with the Rev. Tom King officiating.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies.
