MISSOULA - David Donald "Pa" Rose, 90, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010, of congestive heart failure at his Missoula home. David was surrounded by his loving wife of 67 years, his devoted daughter and son, who never left his side.
David was born January 22, 1920, at Thornton Hospital in Missoula to David Rose Sr. and Mable Emerson (Rose). Growing up in the Frenchtown Valley was one of David's most treasured memories. He attended grade school and high school in Frenchtown. David's ancestors traveled from Quebec, Canada, and homesteaded in this plush, remote valley in the late 1800s, and he was fortunate enough to share their love of this beautiful valley, a place he called home. Many of David's best friends were adjoining farmers and ranchers; he continued those relationships up until his death. David was the last living child born to David and Mable Rose and with that comes an end to a great era and a rich family heritage.
A courtship, which began with a dance at the St.Francis Xavier auditorium, led David to meet and eventually marry Bernice Mary Cornell on June 12, 1943. Together they lived on their Frenchtown farm and raised two wonderful children. David dabbled in a lot of different jobs before settling in with Champion International and eventually retiring from the pulp mill in 1985. After retirement, David became one of the best grandfathers and great-grandfathers anyone could have asked for. He loved this role; we will all miss his gentle voice and him secretly slipping a $20 bill into our pockets. "We miss you already, Pa." Pa never had a negative thought and was always putting everyone else before him. Pa was a lifelong Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a volunteer at the Poverello Center and had a passion for helping those who were less fortunate.
David is survived by his wife, Bernice Rose of Missoula; daughter, Darlene (Phil) Gullo of Frenchtown; son, Vern (Cheri) Rose of Huson; grandson, Anthony (Patrice) Gullo of St. Regis; granddaughter, Nichole (Shawn) Heidrick of Missoula; granddaughter, Summer (Nate) Souther of Missoula; great-granddaughter, Ashley Gullo of Frenchtown; great-grandsons, Kaden Heidrick, Keller Heidrick, Ty Souther and one on the way; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws, all of whom will truly miss his unmatched ability to make people smile. We know you are in heaven giving us all a little tap on the nose with that gentle finger.
David is preceded in death by his parents, David and Mable Rose; brothers, Charles, Daniel, Clarence and Raymond Rose; and sister, Mary Alice (Rose) Bishop.
Out of respect for David's wishes, the family has chosen a private ceremony to celebrate Pa's life.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Missoula, 800 Kensington Ave. Suite 204, 59801.
