Rodney L. Thorning

MISSOULA - Rodney L. Thorning, 75, of Missoula, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2000, at St. Patrick Hospital of natural causes.

He was born in Burlington, Washington, on August 25, 1925, to Tim and Nettie Robbins Thorning. He was raised in Seattle and Darby, and at age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy. He served four years in World War II, and was a veteran of the Solomon Island Campaign.

He met Alta Kearney in Darby and they married in Hamilton on October 8, 1949.

Rod worked in Darby, Missoula and Northern California sawmills before returning to Missoula in 1959, where he worked at the Stone Container Corp. Frenchtown mill until retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife Alta; daughter Cindy Barba and husband John; son Scott Thorning and wife Colette; grandchildren Justin Barba and wife Melissa, Joshua Barba, Ashley Barba, Nathan Thorning and Seth Thorning, all of Missoula; brother Tom Thorning and wife Liz; and five nephews and a niece, all of the Seattle area.

He will be greatly missed by everyone he touched.

Family services were held. Tuesday, November 14, at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton. The family suggests memorials be made to an organization of your choice.
