EAST MISSOULA – William R. McCormick, 77, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at his East Missoula home after an extended illness.

Bill was born October 22, 1934, to William and Helen (Christy) McCormick at St. Joseph Hospital in Deer Lodge. He and his three siblings were raised on the Brown Ranch in the Helmville Valley. Bill attended elementary school in Helmville, high school in Spokane at Gonzaga Prep, and Gonzaga University before entering the Navy in 1955. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Genesee.

After discharge from the Navy, he returned to Helmville and the family ranch. Bill and Geraldine Stromberg were married April 4, 1959, and moved to Missoula. In 1965, they bought their home in East Missoula, where they raised five children. Bill retired from the pulp mill in Frenchtown after 32 years of service.

He was an avid genealogist, which started with photographing old family photo albums and seldom was he seen at family gatherings without a camera in his hands. He immersed himself in genealogy, completing multiple branches of his family tree.

He was preceded in death by his parents, youngest sister Carole McCormick and son Jim McCormick.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine; three sons, Steve, Joe and Rob McCormick; daughter Michelle Lindsey (Steve); sister Kay Crist of Mica, Wash.; brother Mike (Janice) McCormick of Helmville; and grandchildren Shawn and Megan McCormick.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations for the care and maintenance of the St. Thomas Cemetery in Helmville, c/o Darlene Mannix, Helmville, MT 59843.

Viewing was 4-7 p.m. Monday, August 6, at Garden City Funeral Home and a rosary service followed. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, in Helmville at St. Thomas the Apostle Church followed by interment at St. Thomas Cemetery.
